Are you able to have a Christmas tree during the holidays with your cat?

Christmas has very much been and gone now but it will soon be back around again and with that, many will be putting their Christmas trees up again and cats all over will be possibly ready and waiting to jump in the tree or play with the decorations.

Whenever I would put a Christmas tree up, my cats would be very interested in the decorations and one of them use to like climbing the tree. We managed to get them to understand that they could not do that and now they tend to leave the tree alone when we have it up and the most they do now is lay under it.

When it comes to the holidays, are you able to have a Christmas tree up, or do your cats make that difficult?

Luckily we can have one with my two cats but it took some time to make the realize that climbing the tree and also playing with anything on the tree was a no.

Now we can have a tree up and the most they do now is to look at it, unless of course they feel like being a pain and may try it on only to get caught attempting to touch it.

When Smokey was a younger cat, she had a huge interest in the Christmas tree, she would hit the decorations on the tree and would also pull at any tinsel on the tree as well and even climbed it a few times when she was younger.

We would tell her off for doing it and eventually she never really bothered anymore as she got older an the most she would do was lay under the Christmas tree when it was out.

We had one big Christmas tree in 2021 and my cats Bella and Simba had a good time climbing them and enjoying themselves. Last year December was not a good one as we couldn't change the Christmas tree, but they had good times as we celebrated at home with friends coming around.

It's like once the Christmas tree is all set up, there's no other place they would be interested in playing except the tree. I had to get a bigger tree last year but it was still the same outcome as they are all active climbers.

Do you have any decorations on your tree that tend to fall off when they are climbing it? That was always the biggest pain for me to be honest and having to sort it out all the time when they used to climb it, especially the lights.

This was my biggest pain and was why I was glad I was able to get Smokey out of climbing the tree. The lights would go everywhere and the tree would end up in a big mess and have to be decorated again.

I can understand why so many people end up getting fiber-optic Christmas trees now.

Yeah. I believe that any decorations on the tree encourage them to climb the tree, especially if they are playful. Tinsel and baubles can be shiny and sometimes catch their eye and that tends to encourage them. With fiber optic trees tend to have fewer things on that shine and twinkle and they are less interested.

Very much agree. I would always have tinsel and baubles on mine along with tree lights and of course as the light catches the tinsel and the baubles it can make them look shiny and will interest the cat. This is what it seemed to be for Smokey and it would always be the tinsel she would go for.

For this reason alone, I've stopped buying and decorating Christmas trees every year. As my cats won't let the tree be to serve the purpose for which I bought it, I won't worry myself buying it again.

Well, they like getting involved in Christmas and that is a wonderful thing. Maybe you can consider setting up two Christmas trees and keep one in a location that they are inaccessible to.

I have spent a big amount of money on my Christmas tree. It cost me $1500. I would be using it for years until it's no longer in a good condition. My cats always love climbing it all the time. They will be the ones to ruin it sooner.
